Not the usual first stop when heading to Italy but for us this was the place to go. Here we could spend time with friends, relax and settle into the slower pace of Italy.
Chieri, located 40 minutes south of Turin (aka Torinio Olympics 2006) is a small town of about 36,000 people that dates back to Roman times. It was once a wealthy centre of commerce that boasted more than 100 towers and a wall for protection. There is only one tower left and the town is now
A video snap shot of our first week in Italy. We are staying with our friends Valter & Claudia who we met through their son Edwardo. Edwardo stayed with us in 2018 as part of an international study abroad program. The music in the video is courtesy of a concert we attended that was performed by friends of Valter & Claudia - the Corale Pinese.
The Home Our Hosts Claudia & Valter
When I was asking Claudia about travelling she just looked around their property and said "Why would I leave, for me this is paradise."
She is not wrong. Although there home is only located 10 minutes from Chieri it feels like you are on a private estate in the Italian country side. They have many fruit trees, including apple, kiwi, cherry and (another I for got but will fill in latter), Plus the out door kitchen is surrounded by all the herbs that Valter collects as he whips up a meal in his outdoor kitchen. The outdoor kitchen was build by Valter's father who loved to cook. It has a wood fired stove outside where he cooked up some delicious fish and has heavy curtains that can be closed to make it usable even in the winter.
The house was once a winery where grapes were processed but has been extensively renovated and updated. It is now a truly multi-generational home with four independent apartments. In addition to Walter, Claudia and their son Edwardo there is Valter's sister (Helene), his mother and an extra apartment for Claudia's mother.
