My first time in Croatia was back in 1989 when it was still Yugoslavia. I was travelling in a Yugo rental car with two Canadian girls on a budget of less then $20 per day. This time Lisa and I are travelling by bus and boat on a budget of $200+ per day. Our trip from Italy to Croatia started in Venice where we had booked what we thought was a direct bus to our first stop Pula. We were surprised when the bus that showed up was a 9 passenger van. What I had in fact booked was a shuttle used mostly by locals that would pick up and drop off passengers pretty much anywhere. This included excursions down country lanes and then down long gravel roads to what were either very small towns or large sprawling stone mutli-generation homes.
Pula's claim to fame is the incredibly well preserved Roman amphitheatre. The arena still has all three levels on all sides and amazingly you can walk right around the out side walls with a great view of the entire structure. For a few Kuna's you can go inside for a self guided tour but to us it looked like you would just have a different perspective. The Forum is used for performances including Pavarotti, the Foo Fighters and in 2012 it even hosted two professional hockey matches. As you walk around this ancient structure its hard to believe it has been hosting various forms of entertainment since
