After a couple weeks in the cold it was time to head somewhere hot. On route to Cancun we had a layover in Mexico City so we thought it would be fun to try the sleeping pods at the airport. They were super convenient and very futuristic. They were also pretty noisy and a little stuffy.
In Cancun we stayed at an amazing B&B that despite being very close to the city it was surrounded by thick jungle and the sounds of birds and geckos. The Plain Chachalaca birds in the video were the loudest. Luckily they only serenaded while roosting at dusk.
Our amazing host Eva and her husband Kurt had connected me with a local dentist to get my teach cleaned. Dr Ernesto was fabulous and he spotted a small filling and took care of it right there - total coast 1,300 Pesos ($95 cds.) Looks like my new dental plan will include beaches and margaritas.
Eva also recommended several great restaurants. Our favorite was a small road side restaurant called Kora. They had the best Tamarind Margaritas and the tacos and quesadillas were so good we have been back four times.
We picked up Aunt Gwen Mustard Charter from the airport and next we headed to Akumal to meet up with Lisa’s brothers, cousin Bill and their families. Elizabeth Armitage

We left Cancun and headed south to Akumal which is located between Playa Del Carmen and Talum. The Villa we booked is right on the water at the South end of the bay. Meeting us there were Lisa’s brothers Bruce and Mark, their lovely wives Liz & Joanne, cousin Bill and Bruce’s daughters Kyra and Paige. With us and Lisa’s Aunt Gwen that made 10.
The Villa, Casa del Ceilo, was amazing. It came with a fully equipped kitchen, including basic food ingredients, several bottles of booze, a full dinner the first night plus fresh pastries and fruit in the morning. Outside there was lots of different areas to hang out on your own or with the group plus kayaks, boogie boards, paddle boards etc. Looking after us and the house was a lovely Mayan couple Marcelo & Susie.
For the first couple days we stayed close to home to reconnect and enjoy the ocean side. But now we were itching to go exploring.

We were just settling in at Casa Ceilo when we got a text from our daughter Quinn. The dentist had identified 2 root canals, 3 fillings and a wisdom tooth that needed to go. The estimated bill was almost $8,000. So I added Quinn onto our Margaritas and Beaches dental plan and she flew down to meet Ernesto our dentist. She got 2 root canals and 3 fillings for $8,800 pesos ($660 cdn) plus airfare for a total of $1300. Unfortunately while here Quinn got sick for a couple of days and then got water in her ears at a cenote. The water completely blocked her ears and she had to have the wax flushed out. So as a result she didn’t have time to get the wisdom tooth pulled.
But despite all that it was fabulous to have her join us and for her to reconnect with her cousins, uncles and aunts.
On Quinn’s last day in Mexico we went to our favorite little cantina in Cancun Kora and had a fabulous Mexican meal.
We dropped Quinn Terrace off for her flight at 3:30pm and then waited for Stuart Terrace and his girlfriend Sara who were arriving at 4:30pm.

Our last couple week in Mexico were very eventful. We started with Quinn Terrace flying down for two root canals and three filling. Then while Quinn was still here we called home to wish Stuart Terrace a happy birthday only to discover he had been sick in bed for three days and was unable to eat. As we were all in Mexico and his girlfriend was in Hawaii he had been all alone and was now week and not 100% cohearant.
Luckily my parents also called on his birthday and after some discussion they called an ambulance. His saviour Achol then swooped in to come keep him company while the hospital got him rehydrated and did tests to find out what was wrong. He had a severe throat infection which antibiotics cleared up in time for him to get on a plane to Mexico only one day late.
Stuart was going to Mexico for a stag & doe that just happened to be in Talum which is only 25 min away from where we were. It was great to have Stuart and Sara with us for a couple of days while we toured the many cenotes and beaches around Akumal.
Big Thank you to Achol for looking after Stuart and then looking after the dogs and cat while we were away.
